We're excited to share the stories that fuel the creativity and dedication behind the small businesses we love. Today, we introduce you to Lunico Candle Co. from Port Macquarie, a brand that creates evocative soy candles, reed diffusers, room sprays, and wax melts.
Lunico began in the humble setting of a laundry room, and as their vision took shape, the natural next step was to expand into a brick-and-mortar retail store.
Having a physical store allows them to offer a truly unique interactive experience and level of customer service not possible from home or online (although you can still order your fix from their website here).
Our best moments were when we finally finished the flat packs, moving and stocking the shelves and stepping back to see that our vision had come to life.
The store came out better than expected and we love overhearing compliments about our store’s presentation and of course our products.
Our biggest challenges were in fact putting together those flat packs, moving and stocking the shelves AND resisting the urge to DoorDash on those late nights setting up.
We come up with a concept or a theme such as seasons, as an example. So we then talk through scent profiles that resonate with seasons – summers are zesty and lively, but you also have the camping element to summer as well, so we came up with two products for the one season – our Lemongrass + Lime to capture the zest, and Sandalwood + Clove to capture the camping and earthiness of Summer.
We trial mixing the scents, burning the testers and adjusting when needed to find the ideal blend. We then design the labels to evoke the mood, and source vessel from our Sydney supplier that will match any home style.
We both come from very different backgrounds. William was born and raised in Washington State, USA with forests and snow. While Jacob was raised on the Mid North Coast, NSW surrounded by beaches and hinterland.
So when we come up with scents and blends, we think of either who, what or where they remind us of and whether if it is a scent that belongs in anyone’s home. For William, the Spruce + Sage candle reminds him most of his hometown with the scent of evergreens and pine, while Jacob’s favourite candle is Sandalwood + Clove as it reminds him of camping during the summer holidays when he was growing up.
It’s a bit of a roll of the dice at the moment. In the downstairs living area we have our Tailor Made candle burning which has the scent profile of plum, vetiver and mahogany which is fruity with a woody undertone.
Whilst in the upstairs office we have our Sandalwood + Clove candle burning which is earthy and spicy. But when we have movie nights and both of us are in the one living area, we cannot go passed our Cinnamon + Apple candle.
We are excited to be commencing our Candle Making Workshops at the end of June 2024 which is hands on learning with all the materials provided, BYO favourite drink but nibbles will be provided. It’s a great to do with friends, or a way to meet new people. Plus, you get to keep your creation and have an exclusive store discount.
For a more custom experience outside of the workshops, we will be opening our Candle Bar where you can pick your own scent profiles and the glassware for your custom candle. The Candle Bar will also host our Candle Refill services and other custom orders. We aim to reduce waste and to create memorable experiences. Plus, more announcements will be made soon via our social media channels.
